Web3 grant programs are a crucial for protocol growth. While there is an ever growing number of grant distribution mechanisms, they do not help Web3 grant programs to overcome challenges related to effectiveness and transparency.
The Grant Maturity Index (GMI) is a framework to make your Web3 grant program more mature. It helps you identifying efficiency gains, measuring outcomes, and enhancing transparency. These insights allow you to improve grant program results, enhance your decision-making, and optimise your resource allocation and impact.
The GMI consists of 66 data points grouped into six maturity clusters. Fifty-four data points with non-zero weight influence the grant program's score. The index aggregates and weighs data points for a comprehensive understanding of a given grant program.

The Grant Maturity Index (GMI) is a weighted mixed-method composite indicator combining an evaluative scoring matrix with quantitative datapoints. Similar to the World Bank Group’s government technology (GovTech) maturity index, the GMI collects data on grant size, program structure, and documentation. The data is then aggregated in a single overall score and six rubric scores. The higher a program scores, the more mature it is.

The GMI was developed as part of the Grant Innovation Lab (GIL) by with Metagov and in partnership with ENS.domains. We are continuously looking to onboard new partners to enhance the scoring framework.

Ben started his career in Web3 analysing the implications of EU cryptocurrency regulation. He then contributed to one of the first Ethereum-based DID methods. As a RaidGuild member he brought several community staking solutions to production. Ben is also part of the MetaGov Grant Innovation Lab and the Consortium Lead of WID3+, researching crypto-economic procurement as part of his PhD at the University of Malta.

Feems is a grants and governance operator and an applied researcher in grants and impact evaluation. She is a researcher at the MetaGov Grant Innovation Lab and co-founded the DAO Governance Collective. Currently, she serves as the Recognized Delegate Admin for Interests Protocol, a grant reviewer for Arbitrum DAO and Polygon, a member of the Gitcoin Grants Community Council, and a Hats Protocol steward.
